GEWEX-RFA Data Set Description Before attempting to submit data, please read "How to Participate" (http://eosweb.larc.nasa.gov/GEWEX-RFA/documents/how_to_participate.html) and the "File Convention" document (http://eosweb.larc.nasa.gov/GEWEX-RFA/documents/data_format.html) for detailed instructions on the data submission process. Please maintain a copy of this form for each data product (defined by _ as in the "File Conventions" document) you submit to GEWEX-RFA, and submit an updated copy of the file with EACH upload. This file will serve as the documentation for the entire data product within the assessment effort. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Project Title: GEWEX-RFA ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Data product name: CERESERBELIKEAQUAFM3-MOD_Ed2R1 (_) 1) Contact for scientific questions about data Name: Lin Chambers Address: MS 420, NASA Langley Research Center, Hampton, VA 23681-2199 Telephone: 757-864-4371 E-mail address: l.h.chambers@larc.nasa.gov URL: http://asd-www.larc.nasa.gov/people_html/lin.html 2) What is the name of the original archived data set from which this GEWEX-RFA subset was produced? CER_ES4_Aqua-FM3_Edition2 3) Is the original archived data set currently available from another data center or web site? If so, please list addresses or URLs: Yes, http://eosweb.larc.nasa.gov/ 4) Brief data description: A reference or URL for the complete original archived data set documentation, followed by a brief summary of features of particular relevance to the RFA submission (such as gap filling method), is the preferred approach. (Items of interest: input data streams, name of algorithm used to produce data, start and end time of data, gaps in spatial or temporal coverage, and data quality issues, etc.). CERES/Aqua FM3 ERBE-like Edition2 2.5 degree monthly mean data. These data are extracted from ERBE-like ES4 Edition2 data product. Instrument correction is currently needed for this original dataset. Please be sure to read the CERES Aqua ES4 Edition2 data quality summary before using the data. This data quality summary gives a report on the quality of the data at the time of the data release. This is required for every user before they can access the data. The data quality summary is located at http://eosweb.larc.nasa.gov/PRODOCS/ceres/ES4/Quality_Summaries/CER_ES4_Aqua_Edition2.html 5) History of updates and changes. If you resubmit a new version of any part of this data product to GEWEX-RFA, please use this space to record the reasons for the new submission (i.e., fixed error in ___ parameter; changed to area-weighted spatial averaging, etc.) Please specify the parameter(s) affected, new RFA number(s), and the date of the change. The original data has been modified using the Edition2_Rev1 correction. This correction is applied to shortwave, albedo and net radiation for both all-sky and clear-sky fluxes. This correction is available through the CERES Aqua ES4 Edition2 data quality summary as mentioned above. Zonal mean data are calculated from the corrected regional data. Global mean data are calculated from area-weighted zonal mean data to account for the fact that the area of a 2.5 degree zone decreases with latitude. The missing zonal shortwave (swup) mean at the terminator zone is first filled by multiplying the solar insolation (swdn) at that zone by the albedo (alb) value from the next available zone before global mean is calculated. The missing zonal net mean at the terminator zone is then recalculated, using net = swdn - lwup - swup, before global mean is calculated. 6) Please provide a list of publications and journal articles pertaining to these data (if any); or a link to a bibliography for the product. Please provide a reference to the following paper when you publish scientific results with the data: Wielicki, B. A., B. R. Barkstrom, E. F. Harrison, R. B. Lee III, G. L. Smith, and J. E. Cooper, 1996: Clouds and the Earth's Radiant Energy System (CERES): An Earth Observing System Experiment, Bull. Amer. Meteor. Soc., 77, 853-868. When Langley DAAC data are used in a publication, we request the following acknowledgment be included: "These data were obtained from the NASA Langley Research Center EOSDIS Distributed Active Archive Center." The Langley Data Center requests a reprint of any published papers or reports or a brief description of other uses (e.g., posters, oral presentations, etc.) of data that we have distributed. This will help us determine the use of data that we distribute, which is helpful in optimizing product development. It also helps us to keep our product-related references current. 8) Please indicate below all data types currently included in the GEWEX-RFA archive for this data product.
